We read the story of searching for a lost coin, and likened it to how important it is for us to to look for that which is lost.

Or, rather, I likened it to some lost chocolate. Since I didn’t think my boys would give a hoot if I told them I’d lost some money.

Chocolate, now that’s important:

After exercise, we counted beans. Ettin scooped and sorted:

I tried to do an exchange game with Giant, where he would count 10 black beans and trade me for 1 white bean. But I think it was a little too abstract, or too overwhelming with so many beans. In any case, they mostly just played with the beans for a while:

…and practiced sweeping up beans off the floor.

Many, many beans off the floor:

Math, Take 2, was translating a recipe. Giant coloured in shapes for the correlating amount of ingredients:

Then the boys helped me make muffins:

Sooo many helpers!

(We added some frozen garden strawberries to those muffins. AMAZING!!)

Gospel study focused on the story about monkeys.

Okay, the gospel part was about the love of money, but I told the boys about monkeys who let themselves be captured by people as they stick their hands through a tiny hole to get some nuts in a hollowed out trap, and then won’t let go even though their hands are now too big to be able to make it back through the hole. This is like us not being able to free ourselves from wants of our own, like money or toys

We tried this out ourselves with my handy dandy monkey trap:

Nope, they couldn’t get their cute paws out without letting go of the trains.

We also made a custard “resupe,” and Giant coloured in the correct amounts for each ingredient:

We had to make the custard, of course:

And finally, we worked on a message:

Standing!

We’ve got trouble.

(yes, he got up there by himself!)

What’s Green Wednesday

…a tiny tomato sprout, just popped out today.

…my little orange grove, growing slowly but surely.

Today is…Wednesday Mar 2 2011

We started our day with a prayer and scripture lesson. Another “fruit” lesson, this one discussed that you can know what kind of tree is growing by the type of fruit that grown on it. And, similarly, we can tell what type of person someone is by their “fruit”—the stuff they do and say. And that if we want, we can change our hearts and minds to bring forth good “fruit.”

The boys liked the fruit.

Admittedly, I’m often fairly doubtful the boys  even listen—especially as their biggest focus at this lesson seemed to be on whether they could please eat the fruit now. But a couple of times later in the day when there was contention, Giant told me he decided to “change his mind” from a mean mind to a nicer one, and then he worked much more pleasantly with his little brothers. When I complimented this change, he said something like, “Yeah, and that means that this place would be a good place for Jesus to be with us.”

It is amazing to watch these boys learn!

After gym I tried to sneak away and do some baking on my own, telling myself the boys would be well occupied with books and toys.

Ha!

I have two boys who just love helping in the kitchen.

Which meant I had to refocus myself. I think some mothers are quite blessed with the talent of adaptability. I’d say I’m fairly adaptable, but if I’m planning and looking forward to doing something one way (like baking on my own) and another way is needed (like working with two little boys on a time critical project), I have to take a few minutes of quiet time just to readjust. Without yelling too much…hopefully.

Thankfully, I made room for my boys. We got good and floury:

Ettin snuck away later to play trains on his own,

And Galoot played with toys, but was mostly sad momma wasn’t holding him.

After naps, Giant and I worked on the message:

I left him alone to fill in the weather whilst I took a potty break of my own.

When I came back, I found this:

Which needs a cyrillic keyboard to type out properly.

Cool eh?

Giant copied one of the Russian words from our wall onto the board.

I think he was aiming for “cold,” and chose kashka (cat) because it had the k’s. Good Job little boy!!

Then we looked at some rhyming “at” words,

And read a couple of books:

We also worked on drawing, and Giant even paid some attention to the instructions:

Cool castle! (Yes, of course I drew one too.)
