Smile?

I may have discovered part of the reason I have such a hard time taking a picture of Ettin.

Tonight, trying to take his picture, I asked him to smile.

He tried:

Oh, my sweet and wonderful Ettin, we’ll work on that one.

Supper Tonight

Was Scrumptious.

Pesto on Fettuccine (“green cheese pasta”)

Spinach Walnut salad with Apple Poppy-seed dressing (“apple and nut salad”)

And Ettin’s favourite,

Buttered Pumpkin Pie (Butternut squash)

Delicious!

Today is…Tuesday Feb 8 2011

So, what kind of learning goes on in the homeschooling environment when the teacher is sick?

Well (from playing with blocks pdf),

Through their play with diaper boxes large blocks, children develop physically in the areas of large motor skills and eye hand coordination. Cognitive skills are enhanced as the children experiment with balance, structure, design, size and shape.

Social skills develop as children share, cooperate and discuss ideas to accomplish their building goals. The children also experiment, problem-solve, and achieve a sense of accomplishment.

Other learning that takes place as children have fun with blocks, involves learning about size and shapes-parents can introduce new words such as rectangle, square, triangle. A lesson on gravity takes place naturally when stacked blocks fall. Math skills are introduced as you count and talk about concepts of bigger and smaller.

So, essentially, my kids have been stacking diaper boxes for the last two days.

But in a much more educational sense.

Comfort Cooking

Sandwich Cookies

Granola…

Smoothies

Flour Tortillas

I’ve been comfort cooking.

Comfort being the operative word, seeing as my throat is too sore to really enjoy any of it.

(okay, the smoothie was nice.)

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

Pondering how to get more veggies into my boys, we came up with this special treat:

1 banana

3/4 c (ish) cooked orange veggie (this was sweet potato, but butternut squash or carrots also works)

pinch of ginger, dash of cinnamon, sneeze of allspice

milk to cover

Voila, Pumpkin Pie smoothie

…in a cup.

Tastes so good I felt guilty giving my kids more.

Then I remembered that they were only eating a banana, sweet potato, and milk.

Eat up kids!
